TruAlt Bioenergy, the country’s largest ethanol producer, has been officially granted ‘Oil Marketing Company (OMC)’ status. This authorization, previously limited largely to public sector entities and select private oil majors. As TruAlt Bioenergy gets OMC license, it can now directly market and retail petroleum and alternative fuels across the country—firmly embedding the biofuel pioneer within India’s mainstream fuel distribution ecosystem.

TruAlt Bioenergy OMC Status: Entry into Retail Fuels
With its newly granted OMC license, TruAlt Bioenergy is set to launch over 100 flex-fuel retail outlets, beginning with Karnataka and Maharashtra. These outlets will not only sell conventional fuels—Petrol and High-Speed Diesel—but will also offer next-generation energy solutions such as:
- Ethanol blends (E93)
- Bio-Compressed Natural Gas (Bio-CNG)
- EV charging and battery swapping stations
The company has committed that at least 5% of these stations will be located in notified remote areas, aligning with India’s energy equity goals and last-mile connectivity ambitions. The rollout is expected to generate over 2,000 direct and indirect jobs, aiding both rural development and employment generation.
🔁 Circular Model: Farm-to-Fuel-to-Farm
At the heart of TruAlt’s strategy lies a circular economic model that links agricultural communities with clean energy production. By sourcing agri-residue and biomass directly from rural areas, TruAlt not only supports farmers but also turns what was once waste into wealth. Byproducts from ethanol and Bio-CNG production—including solid and liquid fermented organic manure (FOM)—are fed back into the agricultural cycle, enhancing soil health and productivity.
“Farmers are at the heart of our model,” said Vijay Nirani, Managing Director of TruAlt Bioenergy. “This is not just clean energy—it’s inclusive, rural-first energy. We are returning health to the soil and wealth to the farmer.”
Market Standing and Biofuel Leadership
TruAlt commands a 7% market share in molasses-based ethanol and contributes 3.7% to India’s total ethanol supply, placing it at the forefront of the Ethanol Blending Programme (EBP). As India accelerates toward a 20% ethanol blending target by 2025, TruAlt is poised to play a crucial role. In fact, the country hit a record 19.7% blending rate in February 2025, with a year-to-date average of 18.4%.
Alongside ethanol, the company is scaling its footprint in Compressed Biogas (CBG) production under the ‘SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation)’ initiative. TruAlt’s subsidiary, Leafiniti Bioenergy, already operates CBG facilities that support decentralized energy generation and promote circular agriculture.
SAF and Global Biofuel Leadership
Taking a bold leap forward, TruAlt has also announced plans to enter the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) segment. A proposed 10 crore litre per year SAF facility will utilize ethanol as a feedstock, potentially making TruAlt one of the largest SAF producers globally. This expansion into aviation-grade fuels via vertical integration aligns with India’s ambition to emerge as a global hub for green fuels.
Timing the Market Right
TruAlt’s OMC status comes at a time when India’s energy landscape is undergoing rapid transformation. In FY 2024–25, the country recorded its highest-ever petroleum consumption at 239.5 million metric tonnes (MMT). Notably:
- Petrol demand surged 7.5%
- Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) grew by 8.9%
- Diesel-to-petrol consumption ratio fell from 3.6 to 2.3, indicating rising personal mobility and fuel diversification
With over 2.5 crore cars sold annually, India’s mobility demands are outpacing several national populations, underscoring the importance of energy diversification, cleaner fuels, and localized access.

The Bottom Line
TruAlt Bioenergy’s recognition as an Oil Marketing Company is more than a regulatory milestone—it’s a strategic repositioning of the company from a backend ethanol producer to a frontline energy distributor. It cements TruAlt’s status as a national clean energy leader while opening new revenue streams and enabling scale-driven efficiencies across India’s evolving energy architecture.
As India races toward its energy independence and decarbonization goals, companies like TruAlt are not just beneficiaries of the transition—they are the architects.
