In a big step towards India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, IIT Kanpur-incubated aerospace startup VU Dynamics has announced a strategic partnership with Prakash Asphaltings & Toll Highways (India) (PATH Group), a leading infrastructure player. The alliance will co-develop advanced unmanned aerial platforms for defence and strategic civilian applications.

This partnership combines the strengths of both the companies—VU Dynamics’ innovation-driven deep-tech capabilities and PATH Group’s infrastructure execution expertise—to indigenize aerial defence systems. It’s a big moment for Indian aerospace industry which is focusing on homegrown solutions to meet national security needs.

VU Dynamics and PATH Group Deal

VU Dynamics, co-founded by Prof. Subrahmanyam Saderla, Associate Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at IIT Kanpur, and Dr. Sravanthi Saderla, has been developing next-gen aerial systems with proprietary technologies. These include long endurance, operational simplicity and cost efficiency, all developed in India. The startup is incubated under Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC) at IIT Kanpur, one of India’s top technology business incubators.

Speaking on the partnership, Prof. Subrahmanyam Saderla, Co-founder of VU Dynamics, said,

“Our partnership with PATH Group is a big step in scaling our aerial technologies for real world impact. PATH’s operational depth and commitment to nation building makes them the right partner for us to strengthen India’s indigenous aerospace capabilities.”

PATH Group, led by Managing Director Nitin Agarwal, Director Nipun Agrawal, and Director Saksham Agrawal, has decades of experience in large infrastructure projects across India. Their portfolio includes traditional and modern infrastructure delivery models—EPC, BOT, DBFOT, HAM and OMT. With operations in Central India, PATH Group’s expertise covers entire infrastructure lifecycle—from planning and design to IT integration and long term maintenance.

Quotes from Leadership

The partnership has got thumbs up from IIT Kanpur leadership. Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, said:

“It’s a big achievement that a startup incubated on campus by a young faculty member has got investment and attention for its innovative solutions in UAV space. This partnership shows our commitment to translating deep-tech innovation into technological solutions.”

Nitin Agarwal, Managing Director of PATH Group, said:

“We have always admired the innovation coming out of institutions like IIT Kanpur. Scaling these innovations to production is not only a technical challenge but a national responsibility. We are happy to support VU Dynamics in India’s defence manufacturing journey.”

From startup incubation perspective, Anurag Singh, CEO of SIIC, IIT Kanpur, added:

“This partnership is an example of what can happen when startups and industry leaders come together. It shows how academic innovation can become national assets.”

Strategic Implications

This partnership is in line with the Indian government’s overall objective of self-reliance in critical technologies, especially in aerospace and defence. With geopolitics demanding indigenous technological capabilities, such collaborations will be the key to building a robust and innovation driven defence ecosystem.

In practical terms the co-developed aerial systems will be useful for a wide range of defence applications including reconnaissance, surveillance, logistics and combat support. Use of completely indigenous technologies means reduced dependence on imports and greater strategic autonomy for India.
