NMexus™, a New Mexico-based non-profit Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), has signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur), one of India’s top engineering and scientific institutions.

The NMexus and IIT Kanpur partnership marks a major milestone in U.S.-India scientific diplomacy, setting the stage for deep bilateral cooperation in clean and sustainable energy, artificial intelligence (AI), aerospace, cybersecurity, robotics, quantum computing, and advanced manufacturing. This deal is a testament to the operational alignment between two innovation powerhouses across the globe.

IIT Kanpur and NMexus MoU: Details

Under the MoU, NMexus and IIT Kanpur will co-develop research and commercialization pipelines, focusing on technologies that can address some of the world’s biggest challenges — energy security and climate resilience, national cybersecurity and AI-driven manufacturing.

This partnership with NMexus reflects IIT Kanpur’s continued commitment to international collaborations that support high-impact research and innovation,” said Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur. “We want to co-develop scalable, sustainable solutions by leveraging academic, industrial and governmental synergies between India and the U.S.”

For IIT Kanpur, this means global reach and aligns with India’s ambition to become a science and tech superpower. For NMexus™, this plugs New Mexico deeper into a global talent pipeline and advances its economic development agenda.

Economic and Strategic Impact

At the heart of the collaboration is the NMexus Centre, located in the Mesa del Sol innovation district of Albuquerque. A business accelerator and soft-landing hub for global startups, the Centre will host up to 40 companies annually, creating 1,500 jobs and contribute over USD 400 million (~INR 3,420 crore) to the local economy in five years.

The initiative was launched by New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham at the SelectUSA Investment Summit in May 2025, signifying high-level government endorsement and policy support for foreign direct investment (FDI) and tech-led development. Amar Vakil, Executive Director of the NMexus Center, highlighted the global nature of the partnership: “This partnership sets the stage for scientific, technological and economic collaboration between India and the U.S. It connects New Mexico’s growing innovation ecosystem with world-class Indian research, creating opportunities that span the globe.”

A Cross-Border Blueprint

IIT Kanpur and NMexus MoU goes beyond academic exchange — it’s a template for future-proof partnerships where public institutions, non-profits and private enterprise collaborate at scale. With India’s growing digital economy and the U.S.’s deep tech infrastructure, this NMexus and IIT Kanpur partnership has all the ingredients to be a model for international cooperation in tech and sustainable development.

By combining IIT Kanpur’s world-class talent and research capabilities — over 590 full-time faculty and 9,500+ students — with NMexus™’s commercialization framework, this partnership is a complete solution for technology transfer, economic development and workforce training.
