60 MWh was commissioned in Dec 2025; remaining 40 MWh commissioned on 23 Jan 2026
Juniper Green Energy has fully commissioned its 100 MWh merchant BESS project in Bikaner, Rajasthan, positioning itself among the earliest movers in India’s nascent but fast-evolving energy storage market. Juniper Green merchant BESS project is developed by its subsidiary Juniper Green Cosmic. The project achieved full commercial operations on 23 January 2026.
This strategic expansion into energy storage aligns with the company’s broader growth roadmap, under which Juniper Green filed draft papers for an INR 3,000-crore fresh issue on 30 June 2025 and received SEBI approval on 28 August 2025, with ICICI Securities as lead manager.

Juniper Green Merchant BESS Full Commissioning
Juniper Green merchant BESS commissioning was executed in two stages—60 MWh in December 2025, followed by the remaining 40 MWh in January 2026. With approval from the Northern Regional Load Despatch Centre (NRLDC), the project has now entered full-scale commercial operations, enabling participation in multiple merchant revenue streams.
At 100 MWh, the Bikaner facility stands among the largest operational battery storage systems in India, a significant benchmark at a time when large-scale grid storage is still at an early adoption phase.
Why “Merchant” BESS Matters
Unlike contracted or captive storage assets, a merchant BESS operates without long-term fixed offtake agreements, instead monetising market opportunities dynamically. For Juniper Green Energy, this opens avenues such as:
- Peak power arbitrage, buying electricity during low-demand periods and selling during peak hours
- Grid balancing and frequency regulation are critical for managing renewable intermittency
- Ancillary services participation is a growing segment in India’s power markets
This operational flexibility not only enhances revenue potential but also directly supports grid reliability as renewable penetration increases.
Strategic Partnerships and Technology Backbone
The Bikaner BESS project has completed in partnership with Envision Energy (a global renewable energy player), responsible for the supply and installation of the energy storage systems. Juniper Green–Envision collaboration underscores the increasing role of international technology providers in scaling India’s storage ecosystem.
Juniper Green Energy views battery storage not as a standalone asset but as a core enabler of its renewable platform. The company plans to deploy BESS across all its ISTS-connected solar projects, creating an integrated renewable-plus-storage portfolio that maximises asset utilisation and transmission efficiency.
“This milestone unlocks new revenue streams while bolstering grid stability and accelerating our renewable energy mission,” said Ankush Malik, CEO of Juniper Green Energy, highlighting the dual commercial and systemic value of the project.
Pipeline Visibility
Juniper Green Energy has already installed 400 MWh of additional BESS capacity at Fatehgarh, Rajasthan. This facility is expected to be commissioned and operational by Q1 2026. Once operational, this facility will open new opportunities for long-term growth in the renewable energy sector.
Company Overview
Juniper Green Energy started in 2018 in Delhi NCR and has been steadily building up its renewable power portfolio. As of 14 January 2026, the company has an operational capacity of around 1.66GWp, with solar, wind, and hybrid projects combined. Juniper Green is a part of the AT Capital Group in Singapore, which is a prime investor in renewable energy, real estate and financial services.
The Bigger Picture
As India pushes to get more of renewable energy sources, investors are starting to realise how important large-scale battery storage will be in helping to smooth out the ups and downs of solar and wind power. Juniper Green’s merchant BESS project commissioning is a milestone for the company. This also signals that there are some bigger changes going to happen in India’s renewable energy scenario.
