In a major push towards sustainable energy innovation and industrial transformation, HPCL-Mittal Energy Limited (HMEL) and Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) have signed a MoU. IIT Kanpur and HMEL partnership will be a bridge between academic excellence and industrial application with a common vision to develop research and development (R&D) in energy technologies for present and future needs.

IIT Kanpur signs MoU with HMEL at corporate office in Noida in the presence of senior leadership from both the institutions. IIT Kanpur delegation included Prof. Raja Angamuthu, Associate Dean of R&D and Prof. Jayant Kumar Singh, HOD, Chemical Engineering. Prabh Das, Managing Director and CEO, HMEL was present from the company’s side and emphasized the alignment of the partnership with HMEL’s innovation driven strategy.

“Innovation is at the heart of our strategy and this collaboration with IIT Kanpur is a big step towards developing next generation technologies for sustainable and efficient energy systems,” said Prabh Das. “We are excited to work with one of the top academic institutions of India to make an impact.”

Consortium Model for Impact

IIT Kanpur and HMEL partnership will work on consortium model to promote high degree of collaboration between academia and industry. This model is designed to ensure quick translation of research output – from academic insights to practical, scalable and commercially viable solutions.

The partnership will focus on:

  • Sustainable and clean energy technologies
  • Advanced materials development
  • AI enabled energy systems
  • Process innovations across energy and petrochemical operations

This integrated approach will help India to move towards eco-friendly, technology enabled energy solutions.

Bridging the Lab-to-Market Divide

The philosophy behind this partnership is translational research—bridging the gap between academic innovation and real world application. This is in line with HMEL’s history of converting intellectual capital into industrial breakthroughs. The company has one of the highest implementation rates for patented technologies in the Indian oil and gas sector and has filed many patents, many of which are already operational in commercial environment.

IIT Kanpur is one of the top engineering institutions of India and brings in cutting edge research capabilities in areas of chemical engineering, materials science and artificial intelligence—areas critical to the future of energy systems.

About HMEL

Established in 2007 as a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) and Mittal Energy Investment (Singapore), a part of the Lakshmi N. Mittal Group, HMEL operates the Guru Gobind Singh Refinery in Bathinda, Punjab. With a capacity of 11.3 MMTPA, the refinery is one of India’s largest and most modern.

In addition to producing high grade fuels and petrochemicals—including BS-VI compliant fuels, LPG and aviation turbine fuel—HMEL has forayed into petrochemicals and has a dual feed cracker unit which can produce over 2 million tonnes of polyethylene and polypropylene per annum.

Furthering its commitment to energy transition, HMEL has recently partnered with NTPC Green Energy to procure 250 MW of round the clock renewable energy and is exploring frontiers like green hydrogen, green ammonia and green methanol. The company is also setting up a 1,00,000 tonnes per annum bio-ethanol plant in Bathinda to reduce carbon emissions.
